What are the duties of a fire safety assistant?
Fire safety assistants are the first to respond in the event of a fire at the workplace: They fight fires in their early stages, evacuate coworkers from the danger zone, and provide key information to the arriving fire department and the fire safety officer. Companies usually appoint several of them at once.
How many fire safety assistants do I need to appoint?
The Occupational Safety and Health Act (Section 10 ArbSchG) requires every company to designate a sufficient number of employees for firefighting—regardless of industry or size. Specifically, Workplace Regulation ASR A2.2 stipulates that at least 5% of employees on site must be trained; in cases of increased fire risk, the percentage must be higher accordingly. Training for fire safety assistants and evacuation assistants in Munich should be refreshed regularly, generally at least once every three years. Employees engaged in fire-hazardous activities, as well as night watchmen and security personnel, should participate in a fire safety assistant refresher course at least once a year.
